Differences between Scottish and American social and cultural values.

Update on the way.. I will take care of weird sentences and spelling mistakes :)

Both America and Scotland are English-speaking countries. We have done some research on the differences between these two societies.

United states have their national holiday on 4th of July which is their day of independence. Usually countries have their national holiday at the day of their independence; however Scotland celebrates their national day on St. Andrews day. St. Andrew was one of the twelve apostles to Jesus. They celebrate this day in order to honor him.

The population density in America is about half as the density in Scotland. The density in America is 33.7/km^2, and in Scotland the density is 65.61/km^2.

The national costume in Scotland is the Kilt + a Prince Charlie jacket, in the U.S.A there is no national costume because the people there are from such diverse backgrounds that costume represents Americans. The national costume goes under the group.

Some of our questions has been answers, but it would be nice if you could dedicate 2 minutes of your time.

School is free in America as well as in Scotland. How’s the school system, how long are your school days, which subjects do you have, is it much homework? It would be great if you would share that with us!

We also wonder what you guys do on your national holiday?

Get “Follow Me” button on your blog.

On some blog tools you’re not allowed to use scripts in you “Text/HTML” widget. There is a simple solution to that, which this post is all about.

If you’re getting your html code from Twitter, you will most likely get something like this instead of a “follow me button”:

<a href=”https://twitter.com/HaakonHoelB” data-show-count=”false”>Follow @HaakonHoelB</a>

That’s because your blogging tool won’t allow the use of scripts in the HTML code, which is for your safety, anyway here’s how to get your very own follow me button (really simple):

1) Go to http://www.twitterbuttons.com/ (opens in new tab).

2) Enter your Twitter username, and “Enter” and this message will pop up: “Your unique URL has been added to the buttons”

3) Choose your button and click “Select”, a big chunk of code will pop up on your screen, do not worry just copy all the code and go back to your widget dashboard (gadget dashboard on Blogger/Blogspot) and move on to step 4.

4) Drag the widget called “Text”(/HTML”) into the left side (Blog.com, WordPress.com) where all your other widgets are placed, the box will then ask for a tittle, and below you can write a bunch of code, for now we’ll concentrate on the Twitter button. Just paste the Twitter code there and hit save.

5) Your “follow me button” should now appear on your site.

If you have any problems don’t be shy, let me know in the comment section below.

Apple invites to iPhone event!

The invite: Apple's minimalist invitation asks people to attend the San Francisco launch event on the 12th - and the shadow of a five forms underneath

This is the Apple invite. The event goes of as expected, wednesday next week.

The picture speaks for itself, so I won’t say much.

Let’s end this very short post with a simple question:

Will you buy the new iPhone 5?

The latest rumors and final breakdown of “the new iPhone” In pictures.. (mostly)

Apple is expected to unveil the new iPhone (from here: iPhone 5, for clarity) on 12th of September. iPhone 4S wasn’t the phone most tech fans hoped it would be, the lack of 4G, new form factor and bigger screen has to take the blame for that. What should we expect from Apple now? A minor upgrade, or a big one? I’m thinking a big one. I like to think that the 4S was Apple’s backup plan hardware vice. It was the same shape and form as the iPhone 4, and what they did was kind of 3G to 3GS update. This year it’s all about to change.

Looking forward

Bigger screen.

The iPhone is widely expected to ship with a bigger (4 inch) and improved screen, we have seen a lot of pictures showing the new LCD screen.

We may also see NFC technology in the iPhone 5.

If you care enough to learn everything about NFC this is a good place to start: Mobileburn.

But basically it stands for near field communication which speaks for itself.

What you can see from these two pictures (the one right above and the over that one) is that on the first one the home button is not there, on the picture at the bottom you can clearly see the home button screwed to the LCD. I think one of them are the right one, I hope for the one from 9To5Mac, since that one will include NFC.

New backpanel.

Apple is expected to include a new back plate. iLabFactory has made a nice mockup of what he thinks that the iPhone 5 could look like.

The iPhone 5 will 100% sure ship with IOS 6 installed. IOS 6 will include over 200 improvements, inclThe iPhone 5: Everything We Think We Know So Far [Rumor Roundup]uding totally new maps, enhanced Siri features, Facebook integration, and more.

It’s going to have 4G LTE networking.

The new iPad introduced LTE networking and the new iPhone should include that too, however the iPhone may not support the cellular bandwidth bands that we have overseas.

The battery should be thinner and longer, don’t expect a huge improvement in battery life. To power LTE the iPhone 5 will most likely have an 3.8V 5.4WHr bettery with 1440 mAH capacity. This information is from leaked parts from different factories that make Apple’s batteries.

We will see speed improvements.

As always new products from Apple will get a speed boost, expect either the A5X from the iPad 3, or a new A6-chip.

No more 30-pin dock connector.

All your 30-pin sync cables will now be useless if you decide to buy yourself an iPhone 5. The next iPhone will have either 19 or as little as 9-pin connector. For more info on the new dock connector check out this post from CultofMac.com.

We will probably see nano-SIM for the first time

Carriers have reportedly been testing iPhones with smaller nano-SIMs in advance of the unveiling of iPhone 5. The nano-SIM is 40% smaller than todays Micro-SIM.

We will probably see an improved camera.

There’s been few hints of what the new (if new) camera on the iPhone 5 will include, maybe we will see 10 MPX.

Let’s hope the new iPhone will be the best update yet. I hope and think that Apple have a few surprises for us, even so we’ll have to wait.

It’s going to happen on 12th of September.

Will there be more to look forward to in 2012? I think we’ll see an updated iPod lineup, maybe some Apple TV news(?) and I really think we’re going to see an iPad Mini.

Apple Inc. was founded on April 1st, 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne to sell the Apple I personal computer kit. Steve Jobs was said to own 45% of the company, Steve Wozniak with 45% and Wayne with the remaining 10%. Steve Jobs (CEO -> 2011), died last year after fighting cancer for a long time, before he died he was Apple, and he still is. Today Apple is one of the biggest companies in the world with incredibly influence in the tech industry and the world in general. Apple is best known for the iPhone which this post is all about.

Apple’s stock development the last year.

I choose to end this post with a quote from QI:
From Episode A.02

Stephen Fry: Where is ninety percent of the universe?
Jeremy Hardy: Ikea.

Online monolingual dictionaries (which should I choose?)

I want to write about online dictionaries. Why should we use online dictionaries instead of books? First of all, speed. Think about it, if you want to look up a word on your Mac, you just open up your browser and use the URL bar to type the word or question you have and you will get instant feedback. If you choose to go the old-fashioned way, you’ll have to go and find the book, and then you’ll have to look up the word you want to find. It may take two to three minutes instead of 10 seconds.

So the big question remains: which dictionary should I use? I taken the time to test out a handful of online dictionaries.

Which is the best? The two main things I looked at was the definitions of the words, is it easy to understand or is there more words that you don’t understand? The other thing I looked at was the overview of the site, is it easy to manage your way around the site, do I have to use unnecessary clicks to get to the word description?

Now you may ask how can you test out an online dictionary if you don’t search for words? Come on, I’m not stupid. We tested some words and looked on how easy it is to understand what the word means.

We start the whole test of with.. Drum roll please…………….

The main site looks ok, not relatively fresh. The look is kind of old, however it’s easy to know where to search. Even though it may look a little bit old it does describe the words in a good way, you don’t have to use unnecessary clicks to get to the description.

The first time I went to this site it I thought that it was really unclear where to do what. I did a few searches and got a good overview of the site really fast. The site can also translate words to a great variety of languages.

I did not like this site. I think they focus more on ads than getting information to the “client”.

This site is ok. The site does “only” contain 40,000 entries, whereas many of the other sites has a lot more words:”19,500,236 words in 1062 dictionaries indexed” (http://www.onelook.com/)

http://www.onelook.com/

Although http://www.onelook.com/ has a huge database, the site doesn’t give an instant feedback. You’ll have to choose the dictionary you want to search in, it’s like a middleman..

http://www.merriam-webster.com/

Great site, very good explanations of the words. Instant feedback.

http://dictionary.cambridge.org/

This site is “ok”, however I won’t use this as my main database…

http://school.eb.co.uk/

I would not recommend this site..

My favorite:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/

I will use this site much more often, and I hope you will to :)

Living in Norway…

The weather is terrible, everyone shops at IKEA, and Norway is expensive? Not really. Living in Norway, is not that different from living in any other country. In this post I want to clarify a few things about Norway.

http://www.downstreammedia.net/mefford/norway_scenic_breim2.jpg

#1 – The weather is awful.

When I ask people from the other side of the globe about what they think the weather in Norway is like, the answer is always “Well, I`ve heard that it`s raining all the time”. I have to tell them that it`s not like that. Although the weather is bad, it`s not raining all the time.

#2 – Everyone shops at IKEA.

IKEA is not even from Norway! IKEA is originally from Sweden, it was founded in Älmhult, Sweden in 1943. IKEA`s headquarters is now located in Delft, Netherlands.
I`m not going to learn you everything about IKEA, but you can check out the Wikipedia page.

#3 – Norway is really expensive.

Norway is not really that expensive, in fact, the only reason that people find it really expensive here is because the 25% sales tax. All price tags already include that tax, which means that the prices is only slightly higher in Norway than for example the US.

Hi, my name is Haakon. Thanks for visiting my site. On this blog I will write some of my english assignments. The site may not be really interesting right now, but trust me, it will be.
