What Peace One Day wants is obviously peace, world peace. In order to achieve that Gilley wanted to make a day where peace was in focus – where it was no war, no violence, no bullying – just peace.
Jeremy launched Peace One Day was founded in 1999. Gilley wanted to make a day for peace – which he managed: 21. september is the world peace day! 7. September 2011 the UN decided to make the 21. September the world peace day.
Last year, 2012, Peace One Day reached over 280 million people – and that doubled for this year reaching more than 600 million people. Gilley hopes to reach 3 billion people by 2016.
In 2006 Peace One Day started with life-saving initiatives. Bringing food and medical supplies to different areas. 2006 brought 30 tonnes of food to Southern Sudan. Star Syringe Ltd. brought immunization programs to nine countries, last but not least the International Rescue Committee reunited a child, former soldier, with her family. Amazing!
In 2007 the focus shifted to Afghanistan. The ceasefire on the 21. September 2007 allowed UN agencies to move into areas where they couldn’t have gotten before due to the war, making a really big difference in people’s lives there. On that day they managed to provide life-saving polio vaccines to children in southern & eastern Afghanistan – it’s estimated that over 4.5 million children got life-saving immunisation against polio. That is children living in areas that’s usually unreachable due to war and conflicts.
The traction Peace One Day has gotten is incredible! It’s contributed to lives saved, better living conditions for people all over the world. This shows that as long as you have a flame to make something happen you can make it!
We got a chance to talk to Jeremy Gilley! He talked about his story, which was really inspiring.
Listen to the whole conversation here:
As we’re getting ready for the Peace Day 21. September 2014, I would like to thank everyone that’s contributed to this day especially Jeremy who started Peace One Day. Think about the hard work that has been done, and is being done at this very moment! I have huge respect for everyone that helps to make the world a better place!
Who will you make peace with?
